Halfway through the season Manchester United were in a grim situation, they had lost all their games and were sitting in last place in the table. With relegation a very real possibility most of the players were looking for transfers... and to make it worse... the derby match against city was coming up...
None of the players wanted to play and Ferguson didn't blame them, so they all decided to go down the pub and watch the game instead (obviously). But Rooney didn't want to give up so easily and offered to play on his own...
The rest of the players apoligised and wished him luck and Ferguson followed them out of Old Trafford to the pub...
They watch the first ten minutes but Rooney/United goes a goal down, so they switch off, not being able to bear their bitter rivals beating them.
They flick on to Sky Sports News later and are amazed to see that United had drawn 1-1, so they all rush off down to the Old Trafford changing rooms and find Wayne alone.
They all congratulate him and cheer, but realize that he is crying.
"What's wrong Wayne," asks Ferguson, over the celebrations, "you did amazingly to draw 1-1 with Man City, all by yourself!"
"But Fergie," replies Rooney, "I got sent off in the 15th minute!"
